Netsuke is a wonderful way of keeping symbolic animals at your home. They are religious symbols. There are still many netsuke makers. They have the simplicity and their initial use was to use it as a small pouch or box to carry personal items like money, credit cards, important papers etc. They are not like an external pocket. Many people keep the huge collection which are of different sizes and shapes and colors. The carving of netsuke is exquisite but the shape of the is something to be loved, usually it avoids the element of smoothness and softness.
It is a small sculptural object, which has been developed in Japan over more than three hundred years ago. Initially, they were served functional and aesthetic purpose both.
The traditional dress of Japanese, the kimono, had no pockets. Women use to tuck small personal items in their sleeves, but men discontinued using their tobacco pouches, purses, and other items of daily use. These hanging objects are known as sagemono. They were use to attach to the other end of the cord.
When men wore kimono earlier, they had hanging pouches and containers called sagemono in which they use to carry small personal items. The containers hung by a cord to a small carving. This carving was known as a netsuke and its area prevents the cord of hanging container from slipping out.
Initially, the cords were used to tie to a small available items like pieces of wood, root, shell, etc. Gradually these small functions developed into it, by which most of us are known today. It was used by men to hold things like tobacco pouch, money pouch, and small containers.
